Gromphadorhina Sp. – Madagascan Hissing Cockroach Origin: Madagascar Status: Captive Bred Hissing cockroaches make unusual pets, can become very tame and live for several years. As their name suggests, hissing cockroaches produce a hissing sound when disturbed. Adults grow to an approximate size of 6-8 cm. They are very easy to keep and breed. They can also be used as a feeder roach for larger reptiles. Housing: We keep ours in a 42 litre tub (with lid) with drilled holes for ventilation. Plenty of hides are necessary, we use cork bark, but you can use cardboard egg trays. These cockroaches are strong climbers at all stages of their life. Substrate: Peat, coir or vermiculite and leaf litter, approximately 30mm deep. Environment: 25-28°C daytime with a temperature drop to around 19-20°C overnight and a humidity of around 70%. Feeding: They will feed on fruit, vegetables & cereals like other cockroaches. Feed once or twice a week and spot clean any uneaten food. They generally obtain enough moisture from their food but we mist the enclosure with tepid water a couple of times a week. Additional notes: Change the substrate once every 4 to 6 months and consider adding a clean-up crew like springtails and isopods to help maintain the substrate and keep the tank clean and healthy. ** Cleanup Crew bundle available - contains 10+ Porcellio Laevis 'Dairy Cow' Isopods **
