Miomantis paykullii – Egyptian Pygmy Mantis i3+ nymph
Origin: Africa
Status: Captive Bred
This is a small Mantis, measuring around 4cm in length as an adult. Males are slightly longer than the females but are more slender. These mantises should be kept individually as they can be cannibalistic They range in colour from straw like colours going through to light greens, mimicking the grassland they would usually live in.
- Housing: Due to their small size, a small arboreal enclosure around 15cm x 15cm x 20cm would be fine. Ideally with front opening and a mesh on the roof. Ensure that there are plenty of sticks and decoration for them to hang onto.
- Substrate: A mix of organic soil
- Environment: These mantises require a drier and warmer environment than most other mantises.
- Temperature should be between 22°C and 35°C during the day, we keep ours at around 25°C, dropping to about 18°C at night. The humidity doesn't have to by high with these mantises, nymphs need a spray 3 times a week, adults twice a week.
- Feeding: At i3 these mantises eat flightless fruit flies (Drosophila hydei), as they grow, the size of their food can be increased up to small crickets, green bottles and small moths as an adult. If breeding these mantises, then the i1/i2 nymphs will need a smaller fruit fly, such as D. melanogaster.
