Byrsotria Sp 'dark' - South Coast Cockroaches
Price of £18 will be for 10 mixed sized nymphs.
Byrsotria Sp 'dark' are a burrowing species of cockroach that can be found in Central America and Cuba. Female have small vestigial wings and are a deep brown colour, males on the other hand are fully winged and can and do fly although not very well.
Enclosure - A 5 ltr bratplast tub or similar is ideal for a starter colony. Ventilation - These do well with moderately ventilated enclosure. Substrate - They need at least 150mm of substrate which can be a mix of coir and top soil, or 100% coir or flake soil, all types of substrate are acceptable as long as it isn't aloud to dry out for any length of time. These do well with a good layer of decaying hard wood leaf litter on the surface, they will use this to hide in and will also eat it as part of their natural diet. Humidity - 60-70% humidity, a vertical humidity gradient works well with this species, one way to achieve this is by watering the substrate from the bottom up by moving the substrate to one side and watering the bottom of the enclosure.
Temps - Anything from 25C - 28C and these do well.
Food - Usual roach fare, apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, cat/dog/fish food can be used as a staple diet, but trial and error will increase food items that are accepted into their regular diet.
Breeding - Adult can live up to a year or more and are a little slow to breed but once they do they are quite stable and reliable.
