Emerald Cockroaches (Pseudoglomeris magnifica) -Butterfly Plants

Small Emerald Cockroach nymphs (about 1cm across)

Originating from Vietnam these amazing arboreal cockroaches look like little jewels with their metallic green coloration. Being daytime active they make brilliant display animals in a bio-active setup. Males of this species are very active and develop wings once mature, which they use for short flights around their enclosure looking for females. Females tend to be a bit calmer and you will normally find them exploring their tank, hiding amongst leaves or eating during the day.

Care requirements:

Temperature: 18-26 degrees (I tend to let the temperatures drop slightly over night)

Humidity: 65%-80% (I don't mist them I only water the enclosure as necessary for the plants)

Size: 3cm when fully grown

Lifespan: 18 months for females, 12 months for males

Food: Always make sure they have fresh fruit and vegetables, which should make up most of their diet. They particularly like cucumber, sweet potato and courgette. You can also supplement with small amounts of honey and bee pollen.

Enclosure: I've found keeping them in a heavily planted 20cm by 30cm tall bio-active acrylic enclosure to work best. Make sure there are plenty of hiding places for them to rest. (see photo of my set up)

Breeding: This is a slow species to breed, the females take about 4 months from maturing to produce their first clutch (normally 20 young per clutch). They give birth to live young which the female then carries around on her underside until they have their first molt, at which point they become independent and are brilliant escape artists, so make sure all small holes are sealed.
