Porcellio laevis - Giant Orange Isopods x 10 - Leaf Litter Living
SKU: ILEI
Porcellio laevis "Orange" (often called Giant Orange Isopods) are fantastically fun to watch and keep, bold, hungry and not shy to say hi, these guys will definitely brighten up any terrarium. They are typically larger than your average isopod and are active and very hardy. Housing and Substrate Enclosure: Use a plastic tub or ventilation-modified container with good airflow to avoid stagnant, humid air. Substrate Depth: Provide a 3 to 4-inch (7 to 10 cm) deep layer of suitable invert soil mix which must include decaying wood, rotting wood pieces, and a deep layer of leaf litter on top for security and grazing. Temperature and Humidity Temperature: Keep them in a warm range of 18°C to 26°C (64°F to 79°F), which aligns well with standard indoor temperatures. Moisture Gradient: Do not soak the entire container. Keep roughly one-third of the enclosure wet (using damp sphagnum moss) while letting the remaining two-thirds stay dry. This allows them to regulate their hydration. Diet and Supplements Staple Diet: Continuous access to decaying hardwood leaves and rotten wood. Vegetables: Supplement with small portions of squash, carrots, or leafy greens. Protein: They have a high demand for animal protein (such as dried shrimp, or fish flakes) offered 1 to 2 times a week to prevent cannibalism. Calcium: Maintain constant access to a calcium source like cuttlebone, eggshells, or oyster shells for healthy exoskeleton development.
