Porcellio haasi 'High Yellow' Isopods - Woodlouse Culture

Porcellio haasi 'High Yellow' Isopods - Woodlouse Culture

Looking for a true "giant" of the isopod world with unmatched coloration?

The Porcellio haasi "High Yellow" is a spectacular Spanish species, prized for its large, elongated body and vibrant lemon-yellow spotting against a dark, charcoal-grey exoskeleton. As one of the largest species in the Porcellio genus, they are famous for their long uropods (tails) and their bold, inquisitive personalities.

At EntoScapes, our High Yellows are UK captive-bred and raised on our specialist high-calcium, well-ventilated systems to ensure they arrive robust and healthy.

Explore the sections below for our biology-led guide on the Mediterranean climate requirements, vertical climbing space, and the specific ventilation needs of these stunning Spanish giants.

    • Origins: They originate from dry, mountainous regions of Spain and can tolerate a drier environment than most other Spanish species.

    • The Spanish Giant: Reaching lengths of up to 3cm, P. haasi is an impressively large species. Their elongated shape and long "tail" appendages (uropods) make them look even more imposing than other "giant" isopods.

    • Appearance: The 'High Yellow' morph has vibrant yellow spots and white/grey skirting. This species is sexually dimorphic and males have very long uropods which are noticeably longer from a young age.

    • Enclosure Preferances: We find these like a thick layer, at least 3cm, of leaf litter topped off with curved bark pieces which allows them to escape excess humidity. They will also settle quickly in a tank with lots of surface area to avoid male competition, and are prolific breeders once happy.

    • Humidity Paradox: Too much humidity causes fast die-offs with this species, so its important to not over spray and have excellent ventilation. They do however require a significant moisture gradient. They need a very damp corner (usually Sphagnum moss) but require the rest of the enclosure to be dry and extremely well-ventilated.

    • Calcium Hungry: Like other larger species of isopod, these require a constant source of calcium, so a large cuttlebone or supplement can be left in their tank at all times.
