Seville ‘Caramel ' Isopod (Porcellio sp. 'Sevilla') - Woodlouse Culture

Looking for a Mediterranean giant with a warm, "honey-toned" aesthetic? The Porcellio sevilla "Caramel" is a spectacular Spanish species, prized for its massive size, wide-flanged body, and beautiful creamy-orange coloration.

As one of the largest and most "architectural" species in the Porcellio genus, they are famous for their bold, surface-active personalities and their impressive, elongated uropods.

At EntoScapes, our Caramel Sevillas are UK captive-bred and raised on our specialist high-calcium, well-ventilated systems to ensure they arrive as robust, healthy giants ready to dominate your display.

Explore the sections below for our biology-led guide on their dry-scrubland origins, their need for vertical climbing space, and why these Spanish "Caramels" require the superior cross-ventilation of our bespoke acrylic habitats.

    • Origins: Porcellio sevilla are one of the 'Spanish Giants' and require slightly different care to most isopods. Native to the arid, rocky regions of Southern Spain (specifically around Seville). Biologically, they are adapted to a "Mediterranean" climate - characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, damp winters. This heritage makes them exceptionally hardy in UK homes, provided they are given the correct moisture-to-airflow ratio.

    • The "Caramel" Morph: A lovely morph of the wild variant, with a smooth light orange body and clean white skirting. While the wild-type P. sevilla is a slate-grey, this "Caramel" line has been selectively bred to enhance the warm, orange-brown pigments in their exoskeleton. This creates a stunning "honey-glaze" look that contrasts beautifully against dark cork bark and leaf litter.

    • Architectural Giants: Reaching lengths of up to 3cm+, they are true titans. They feature wide "skirts" (epimera) and exceptionally long "tails" (uropods), giving them a prehistoric, armored silhouette that makes them a favorite for macro-photography.

    • Bold surface activity: This species is super active and can be seen out in the open exploring their tank and munching on decaying leaf litter.

    • Space Requirements: They will also settle quickly in a tank with lots of surface area and hiding spots and are prolific breeders once happy. Too much humidity causes fast die-offs with this species, so its important to not over spray and have excellent ventilation. We find these like a thick layer, at least 3cm, of leaf litter topped off with curved bark pieces which allows them to escape excess humidity.

    • Calcium Requirements: Like other larger species of isopod, these require a constant source of calcium, so a large cuttlebone or supplement can be left in their tank at all times.
