🔍 At A Glance: Panda King Isopods Husbandry Summary

  • Scientific Name: Cubaris sp. 'Panda King'

  • Common Names: Panda King Isopods | Panda Isopods

  • Adult Size & Lifespan: 1–1.5cm | Long-lived genus with adults reaching 2–3 years

  • Breeding & Growth Rate: Lower reproduction rates typical of the Cubaris genus, though they are notably hardier and faster to establish than rarer counterparts.

  • Ideal Climate: Temperature: 18–23°C (Kept at 21–23°C The EntoScapes Way) | Humidity: 70–80% (Requires a stable moisture balance, but this specific species is exceptionally forgiving of beginner husbandry errors and slight environmental fluctuations).

  • Physical Identification & Behaviour: Striking black and white block colouration that beautifully resembles a giant panda. Semi-fossorial detritivores that spend significant time burrowed within the substrate or tucked underneath bark, becoming highly visible on the surface once the colony population builds.

  • Place of Origin: Naturally found in the humid, dark cave systems of Vietnam.

  • Calcium & Substrate Enrichment: Because their wild habitat is rich in limestone, a supplement of natural limestone can be added to the enclosure, though standard cuttlebone works flawlessly.

At EntoScapes, our Panda Kings are UK captive-bred and raised on our specialist calcium-rich substrates to ensure they arrive active and healthy. Whether you are building a tropical bioactive terrarium or a dedicated display colony, these social, burrowing isopods are a charming and functional addition.

    • Beginner Designer Species: Cubaris sp 'Panda King' are a great beginner species for those wanting to keep more expensive exotic isopods within the Cubaris genus, but want them to be a bit hardier. They gained their name from their black and white block colouration resembling that of a panda!

    • Origin: These are naturally found in the humid cave systems of Vietnam which contain limestone, so a supplement of limestone can be provided although its not crucial, as cuttlebone works just as well.

    • Behaviour: Like other Cubaris, these are semi-fossorial so will spend a lot of time in the substrate and under bark, but they can be seen more often once their population increases.

    • Life Span: The genus is known for having longer lifespans and lower reproduction rates which usually is reflected in their price tag. Too dry or too wet of an environment in captivity is the main culprit of a colony crash for Cubaris, but this species seems to be more tolerant of fluctuations and mistakes which makes them ideal for beginner hobbyists.
