🔍 At A Glance: Crystal White Isopod Husbandry Summary

  • Scientific Name: Porcellio laevis (Crystal White Morph)

  • Common Names: Crystal White Isopods

  • Adult Size & Lifespan: 1–2 cm | Adults can live up to 2 years

  • Life Cycle Timeframe: Exceptionally rapid; completes a full life cycle in approximately two months

  • Breeding Rate: High; explosive population growth once established (among the most prolific Porcellio species)

  • Ideal Climate: Temperature: 18–23°C (20–22°C for optimal results) | Humidity: 60–80% (70–80% preferred)

  • Physical Identification: Completely stark white, translucent-leaning morph with a entirely smooth dorsal surface, two pairs of pleopodal lungs, and distinctive spear-shaped uropods visible on mature males.

  • Enclosure Sizing Guide: Starter cultures of 10–20 individuals thrive in a 20x15x15cm environment; large breeding master colonies scale up cleanly into a 40x20x20cm ventilated storage container setup.

  • Dietary Base: Detritivore essentials (Hardwood leaf litter, rotten hardwood, premium edible flake soil, organic waste, and damp sphagnum moss)

  • Supplemental Nutrition: High-protein sources (fish flakes, shrimp pellets, nutritional yeast) fed 1–2 times per week + constant calcium access (crushed cuttlebone or eggshells)

At EntoScapes, our Crystal Whites are UK captive-bred and raised on our nutrient-rich substrates to ensure they arrive robust and ready to thrive. Whether you are stocking a high-waste reptile enclosure or a dedicated display colony, these social, snow-white isopods are a striking and efficient addition.

      • Size & Life Cycle: Porcellio laevis are one of the larger species of isopod, with adults reaching anywhere between 1-2cm. P. laevis can complete their life cycle in around two months, and adults can live for up to two years.

      • Morphology: This species can come in a variety of colour morphs, but typically all have a smooth dorsal surface, two pairs of pleopodal, or ‘external’ lungs, and males can easily be identified by their long, ‘spear-shaped’ uropods.

      • Establishment time: We suggest adding any clean-up crew 7-14 days prior to adding other inhabitants, to ensure the colony has enough time to establish itself within their new environment.

      • Protein hungry: Bare in mind this species is very protein hungry, so can sometimes do more harm than good for certain reptiles when moulting if their population is not kept in check.
